Minecraft health, damage and death questions, answered
What hurts you, how much, and what happens when you die, on Java and Bedrock.
How many hearts does a player have?
10 hearts, which is 20 health points. Each heart is 2 points.

How do you get more than 10 hearts?
Absorption from golden apples adds temporary yellow hearts. Health Boost from commands raises max health, and on Java /attribute can change it.

How fast do you heal naturally?
With a full hunger bar and saturation you heal quickly; with 18 or more hunger points you heal 1 point about every 4 seconds.
What does the Regeneration effect do?
Regeneration heals health over time, faster at higher levels. Regeneration II from a golden apple heals quickly for a few seconds.

What does Resistance do?
Resistance lowers incoming damage by 20% per level. Resistance V makes you take no damage at all.

How much fall damage do you take?
You take 1 point of damage for every block you fall beyond the first 3. Feather Falling, water, hay bales and slime reduce or stop it.

How much damage does lava do?
Lava deals 4 damage every half second and sets you on fire. Fire Resistance makes you immune to both.

What is suffocation damage?
If your head is inside a solid block, such as falling sand or gravel, you take 1 damage every half second until you get out.

What does the void do to you?
Falling below the world deals heavy damage that ignores armor and kills you quickly. Items in your inventory are lost.

What is freezing damage?
Standing in powder snow slowly freezes you, then deals damage. Leather armor stops freezing; fire or leaving the snow thaws you.

Does cactus hurt you?
Yes. Touching a cactus deals 1 damage. Sweet berry bushes also hurt you when you walk through them.

What does lightning do to players?
A lightning strike deals 5 damage and sets you on fire. It also changes some mobs, such as turning creepers into charged creepers.

What is the Wither effect?
Wither damages you over time and turns hearts black. Unlike Poison, it can kill you.

Can poison kill you?
No. Poison stops at half a heart, so it cannot kill you by itself. The Wither effect can.

What is magic damage?
Magic damage comes from potions of Harming, evoker fangs and some other sources. It ignores armor but not the Protection enchantment.

Where do you respawn in Minecraft?
At your bed or respawn anchor if you set one, otherwise near the world spawn.

What do death messages mean?
A death message says how you died, such as "fell from a high place" or "was slain by Zombie". They show in chat to everyone.

Can a totem save you from the void?
No. A totem of undying does not save you from void damage or from /kill. It works against almost every other way of dying.
