What each Minecraft game rule does
Game rules change how a world behaves. Names below are Java 1.21.11+ (snake_case); Bedrock and older Java use camelCase names, and some rules exist on one edition only.
How do you stop pillager patrols?
Set /gamerule spawn_patrols false on Java 1.21.11+ (doPatrolSpawning before). Patrols then stop appearing.

How do you stop wardens spawning?
Set /gamerule spawn_wardens false on Java 1.21.11+ (doWardenSpawning before). Shriekers can no longer summon a warden.

How do you turn off monster spawners?
Set /gamerule spawner_blocks_work false on Java. Spawner blocks then stop spawning mobs.

Can spectators load new chunks?
Yes by default. The Java rule spectators_generate_chunks set to false stops players in Spectator mode from generating new terrain.

What is universal anger?
With universal_anger on (Java), an angry neutral mob such as a zombified piglin attacks any nearby player, not just the one who angered it. It is off by default.

How do you stop infinite water sources?
On Java, set water_source_conversion to false. Water no longer makes new source blocks between two sources.

How do you stop vines from spreading?
On Java, set spread_vines to false. Normal vines stop growing; cave, weeping and twisting vines are not affected.

What does elytra_movement_check do?
It makes the server check how fast players fly with elytra. Turning it off can stop rubber-banding on laggy servers, but also stops speed-hack checks.

How do you hide advancement messages in chat?
Set /gamerule show_advancement_messages false on Java. Advancements still unlock, they just are not announced.

What does log_admin_commands do?
On Java it decides whether operators' commands are written to the server log. It is on by default.

What does global_sound_events do?
With it on (the default on Java), the Wither spawn, Ender Dragon death and End portal sounds are heard by every player, wherever they are.
