Minecraft game mode questions, answered

The five ways to play a Minecraft world - Survival, Creative, Hardcore, Adventure and Spectator - plus the difficulty settings, with the Java and Bedrock differences.

The game modes

What are the game modes in Minecraft?

There are four game modes: Survival, Creative, Adventure and Spectator. Hardcore is a locked version of Survival with one life.

Survival and Creative can be picked when you make a world. Adventure and Spectator are switched to later, with a command or the game settings. Bedrock also has a Default setting that follows the world's game mode.

What is Survival mode in Minecraft?

Survival is the normal way to play. You gather blocks, craft tools, fight mobs and keep yourself fed, and you can die.

You have a health bar, a hunger bar and armor. When you die you drop your items and experience and respawn at your spawn point. Most players start here.

What is Creative mode in Minecraft?

Creative mode gives you unlimited blocks and items, lets you fly and break blocks instantly, and you cannot be hurt.

There is no health or hunger bar. The only thing that can still kill you in Java Edition is falling into the void or a command such as /kill. Creative is built for building and testing.

What is Adventure mode in Minecraft?

Adventure mode is for custom maps. You can fight, trade and press buttons, but you cannot break or place blocks normally.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Adventure

What is Spectator mode in Minecraft?

Spectator mode lets you fly through blocks and watch the world without touching anything. Mobs and normal players cannot see you.

Other spectators see you as a see-through head. Your hotbar and health disappear. In Java Edition you can click an entity to see through its eyes; Bedrock cannot do that.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Spectator

Is Spectator mode on Minecraft Bedrock?

Yes. Bedrock Edition has Spectator mode, but you cannot click a mob or player to see through its eyes as you can on Java.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Spectator

Which game mode is best for beginners?

Survival on Peaceful or Easy difficulty is the gentlest start. You learn crafting and building while few or no monsters attack.

Creative is good for learning how blocks look and fit together, but it skips gathering, crafting and danger, which are most of the game.

What is the Default game mode on Bedrock?

Default makes a player use whatever game mode the world is set to. If the world changes to Creative, that player changes too.

Switching game modes

How do you switch to Creative mode in Minecraft?

Type /gamemode creative in chat. Cheats (Allow Commands) must be on in that world, or you must be an operator on a server.

On Bedrock you can also change your personal game mode in the world's Settings screen. On Java, F3 + F4 opens a quick game mode switcher when cheats are on.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Gamemode

How do you switch to Survival mode?

Type /gamemode survival. You need cheats turned on or operator rights.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Gamemode

How do you get into Spectator mode?

Type /gamemode spectator, press F3 + N on Java with cheats on, or die in a Hardcore world.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Spectator

What does F3 + F4 do in Minecraft?

On Java Edition, F3 + F4 opens the game mode switcher, so you can jump between Creative, Survival, Adventure and Spectator without typing.

Hold F3 and tap F4 to move through the four icons, then let go of F3. It only works when cheats are allowed.

What does F3 + N do in Minecraft?

On Java Edition, F3 + N switches between Spectator and your previous game mode. Cheats must be on.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Debug screen

Can you change the game mode without cheats?

Not with /gamemode. On Java 26.3+ the host can change Personal Game Mode in Pause, World Options. Bedrock lets you change it in the world settings.

On Java 26.2+, Allow Commands can also be switched on later in World Options. On Bedrock, turning cheats on or switching to Creative stops that world from earning achievements.

What number is Creative mode in commands?

On Bedrock, 0 is Survival, 1 Creative, 2 Adventure, 5 Default and 6 Spectator. Java commands now take only the names, such as creative.

Creative mode questions

How do you fly in Creative mode?

Double-tap the jump key (Space). Hold Space to go up and Shift to go down. Double-tap again to land.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Creative

Can you die in Creative mode?

Only from the void or commands. Mobs, lava, fire and falling cannot hurt you in Creative mode.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Creative

Do mobs attack you in Creative mode?

No. Hostile mobs ignore players in Creative mode, so creepers will not explode and zombies will not chase you.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Creative

How do you get command blocks in Creative mode?

Use /give @s command_block. On Java you can also turn on Operator Items Tab in Controls, which adds them to the Operator Utilities tab.

Pick block (middle click) copies a command block that is already placed.

How do you get spawn eggs in Minecraft?

Spawn eggs are found in the Creative inventory. Survival players cannot craft them, and on Java they cannot be picked up from a monster spawner either.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Spawn Egg

What is pick block in Minecraft?

Pick block (middle mouse button) puts the block you are looking at into your hotbar. In Creative it gives you a new copy.

In Survival it only works if that block is already in your inventory.

Can you break blocks faster in Creative mode?

Yes. Every block breaks instantly in Creative, even obsidian and bedrock. Holding a sword stops you from breaking blocks.

Can you sleep in Creative mode?

Yes. Beds work in Creative, and sleeping still skips the night.

Survival and Hardcore questions

What happens when you die in Survival mode?

You drop your items and a little experience (7 points per level, at most 100), then respawn at your bed, respawn anchor or the world spawn.

The rest of your experience is lost. Dropped items stay on the ground for 5 minutes. The keep_inventory game rule (keepInventory on Bedrock and Java before 1.21.11) stops the drop.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Death

What happens when you die in Hardcore mode?

You cannot respawn. On Java you can spectate the world or go to the title screen; on Bedrock you can spectate or return to the main menu.

Either way, that player cannot play the world in Survival again.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Hardcore

Can you play Hardcore with friends?

Yes. A Hardcore world can be shared on LAN, and servers can run with hardcore=true in server.properties.

On Java 26.3+ LAN is set in Pause, World Options. On a server, each player who dies becomes a spectator while the others keep playing.

Can you use cheats in Hardcore mode?

No. Allow Commands is locked off in Hardcore worlds. Since Java 26.2 sharing a Hardcore world on LAN no longer offers it either.

Why are my hearts different in Minecraft?

Hardcore hearts have a different pattern. Other icons show effects: green for poison, black for wither, blue for freezing, and yellow hearts for absorption.

How do you get your stuff back after dying?

Go back to where you died within 5 minutes before the items despawn. A recovery compass points to your last death spot.

Press F3 on Java to see your coordinates, and write down where you were. Chunks must be loaded for the timer to run, so items in unloaded chunks wait.

What is the first thing to do in Survival mode?

Punch a tree for logs, make planks, a crafting table and wooden tools, then get stone tools and a shelter before night.

Make a bed from three wool and three planks as soon as you can, so you can skip the night and set your respawn point.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Beginner's guide

How do you survive the first night in Minecraft?

Build a small shelter with a door, place a torch inside, or dig into a hill and block the entrance before dark.

Monsters spawn in darkness. Sleeping in a bed skips the night, so wool from three sheep is the fastest fix.

What does the experience bar do?

It shows your experience level. You spend levels on enchanting, anvils and the grindstone gives some back.

Difficulty

What are the difficulty levels in Minecraft?

There are four: Peaceful, Easy, Normal and Hard. Hardcore worlds are locked on Hard.

Difficulty changes how much damage mobs deal, whether hunger can kill you, and which mob features appear.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Difficulty

What is the difference between Easy, Normal and Hard?

Mobs hit harder as difficulty goes up, and starvation goes further: down to 5 hearts on Easy, half a heart on Normal, and death on Hard.

Hard also lets zombies break doors and call reinforcements, and on Java only Hard lets spiders spawn with status effects.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Difficulty, Minecraft Wiki - Hunger

Can you starve to death in Minecraft?

Only on Hard difficulty. Easy stops starvation at 5 hearts and Normal stops it at half a heart.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Hunger

How do you change the difficulty in Minecraft?

Type /difficulty hard (or peaceful, easy, normal), or change it in the menu: on Java 26.1+ it is in Pause, World Options; older versions use Options.

Java has a lock button next to difficulty. A locked difficulty cannot be changed again in that world.

What is the default difficulty in Minecraft?

New worlds start on Normal difficulty. A new server starts on Easy unless you change difficulty= in server.properties.

Do zombies break doors in Minecraft?

Only on Hard difficulty. Zombies can then break wooden and copper doors; iron doors are always safe.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Zombie

Do mobs spawn on Peaceful?

Most hostile mobs do not. Animals still spawn, and a few hostile mobs such as the Ender Dragon and shulkers still appear.

On Peaceful your health refills on its own and your hunger bar does not drop.

Source: Minecraft Wiki - Difficulty

Is Hard difficulty worth it?

Hard gives some better rewards: more mobs with armor and enchanted gear, which can drop, and more villagers survive as zombie villagers.

On Hard, every villager killed by a zombie becomes a zombie villager, which you can cure for cheaper trades.

What is regional difficulty in Minecraft?

Regional difficulty rises the longer players stay in an area and as the moon gets fuller. Higher values make mobs better equipped.

Java shows Local Difficulty on the F3 screen. It caps after many hours spent in the same chunk.

What is a seed in Minecraft?

A seed is the number that decides how a world generates. The same seed and version make the same world.
