Minecraft enchanting tips, answered

How to get the enchantments you want without wasting levels.

The enchanting table

How do you reroll enchantments on an enchanting table?

Enchant something cheap, such as a book at the lowest level. That changes your seed, so the next item gets new offers.

How much lapis does enchanting cost?

1, 2 or 3 lapis lazuli for the three offers. The offers ask for at least 1 to 30 levels, but you only lose 1, 2 or 3 levels.

Can you get Mending from an enchanting table?

No. Mending is a treasure enchantment: get it from librarian trades, fishing, chests or raids.

Is it better to enchant books or items?

Enchanting the item gives a chance of several enchantments at once. Books let you save enchantments and combine them later in an anvil.

Why can't I enchant my item?

Some items cannot be enchanted at the table, and already-enchanted items cannot be enchanted again there. Use an anvil with a book instead.

Conflicts and choices

Which enchantments cannot go together?

Sharpness, Smite and Bane of Arthropods; the four Protection types; Silk Touch and Fortune; Infinity and Mending; Depth Strider and Frost Walker; Riptide with Loyalty or Channeling; Multishot and Piercing.

On a mace, Density and Breach conflict with each other and with Smite and Bane of Arthropods.

Can you get Sharpness and Smite on the same sword?

No. Sharpness, Smite and Bane of Arthropods are exclusive; a sword can have only one of them in Survival.

Is it cheaper to buy enchanted books from villagers?

Often yes. A librarian can sell a chosen book, such as Mending, again and again for emeralds, while the table is random.
